Three dead and 25 injured after 95 vehicles piled up due to fog on Interstate 77 highway near the Virginia-North Carolina border in the US on Sunday, reports Gma Yahoo on April 1, 2013.
Corrine Geller, Virginia State Police spokeswoman, mentioned that the injuries suffered range from serious to minor.
The Police said that there were around 17 separate crashes along that route that resulted in the 95 vehicles pile up.
Geller also pointed out that the message boards placed along the interstate highway displayed the warning of severe fog.
Furthermore, the fog in the Fancy Gap Mountain region is blamed for the huge accident.
Geller told AP that a crash was reported at the epicenter that involved up to eight vehicles, some of which caught fire.
The authorities told that the first emergency calls began at 1:15 p.m. Virginia State Police immediately closed the northbound lanes to let the emergency vehicles reach the place of accident quickly.
The AP quoted Glen Sage, who works in the American Red Cross office in the town of Galax, Va. who commented that “This mountain is notorious for fog banks.
They have advance signs warning people. But the problem is, people are seeing well and suddenly they’re in a fog bank.”
