9to5 Colorado Leaders and Partner Organizations Take Action for Renters’ Rights & Affordable Housing
Denver Metro Area leaders fight for Renter’s Rights and the Preservation of Affordable Housing as part of National Renter’s Week of Action
Colorado – Community members from Denver, Aurora, Westminster, and Commerce City came together to participate in the National Renter’s Week of Action alongside other affiliates of the Right to the City Homes For All campaign. These impacted community and non-profit organizations behind the following local actions are all part of a statewide coalition called Colorado Homes For All, which was formed as a response to the national and local housing crisis.
Colorado kicked off the National Renters’ Week of Action here locally with “Evicting THE EVICTOR,” an action that exposed the Tschetter, Hamrick and Sulzer Law firm that represents 80% of corporate landlords across Colorado. In Denver alone, about 160 people are sent to court for an eviction a week, according to Colorado Affordable Legal Services, and almost all of them have this law firm representing the landlord. Community members dropped off an eviction notice and shared stories about their own experiences being evicted. Tschetter, Hamrick and Sulzer law firm was evicted for representing some of the worst landlords in Colorado.

A second emergency action took place in Denver Meadows mobile home community, where residents have been fighting to keep their homes for over a year. The park is set to close in June 2018, so residents and their allies asked the owner to sell the park to Denver Meadows residents who have successfully found an organization willing to finance the park. There are over 350 residents currently living in the park who are facing displacement, most of whom are children.

Grassroots organizing groups including 9to5 Colorado, United for New Economy (UNE), Asian Pacific Development Center, Our Homes Our Right, Colorado Cross Disability Coalition, Growing Home, are banding together to stand in solidarity on this day of action. We invite any and all residents, community stakeholders, and media to stand with us on September, 21s,t 2017 to lift up this critical issue affecting thousands of Coloradans all over the state.
