Mary Beth Pfeiffer’s investigation for RESCUE on the FDA’s false narrative on people ingesting horse paste earned her thousands of new Twitter followers—and an account suspension from Twitter.

Yesterday Teresa and I published an investigation, “Horse-Bleep,” by reporters Mary Beth Pfeiffer and Linda Bonvie documenting that the FDA launched the ivermectin “horse-dewormer” hoax on the flimsiest and most deceptive basis.

Oops! The Mississippi state health department, based on poison control data, said 70 percent of calls were from people who’d taken the livestock version of ivermectin. “Actually, two percent of all calls were for ivermectin,” Mary Beth told us. “When we pressed them for actual numbers, the total calls for livestock ivermectin were four.” None seriously harmed. Mary Beth forced The New York Times to correct.

Quoting from FDA emails obtained by Linda through the Freedom of Information Act, including from the acting commissioner, the story documents that one of the most popular tweets in FDA history, written to shame people into not taking ivermectin for covid-19—“You Are Not a Horse. You are Not a Cow. Seriously, y’all. Stop it”—was based not only on inaccurate medical science but bad reporting of flawed data, a 3,400-percent exaggeration.

Yet that was enough for the government, just as it pushed more for mass vaccination, to launch a weeks-long media onslaught to demonize a Nobel-Prize-winning human drug with powerful efficacy against covid—one of the safest human drugs in history—as dangerous horse medicine.

How many covid-19 patients died without access to ivermectin as a result we’ll never know. It was enough for CNN and other media to unleash a barrage of lies about Joe Rogan taking horse medicine that finally forced the rankled podcaster to demand an apology from CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta for his network’s deceptive reporting.“It’s a lie! It’s a lie on a news network!” Rogan said, “You are talking about a drug that has been given out to billions and billions of people…Why would they lie and say that is horse dewormer? I can afford people medicine, motherfucker. It’s ridiculous.”

Mary Beth’s Twitter account was roaring with thousands of new signups until just after noon today, when the social media giant took her down. Twitter suspended her account for seven days, sending a clear intimidating message, which has led to permanent exile from the country of open speech for many others, that she must play within the lines of government-and-media approved thought, or else. Mary Beth felt the cold wind blowing across her First Amendment right to expression and opportunities for her livelihood. Strangely, the message arrived as a friendly, “Hi Mary Beth Pfeiffer” notice and a “we understand” your difficulties empathy. Like this:

Here at RESCUE we thought the “Hi Mary Beth” was an ironic soft touch—just the kind of soft despotism the French political philosopher Alexis de Tocqueville imagined would someday threaten the United States in his 1835 classic, Democracy in America, with the right “agitation” and “crisis” that would supply the precondition of tyrannical expansion of state power. Though hard to imagine in an age when the French were lopping off heads, de Tocqueville foresaw the “kind of despotism democratic nations have to fear:”

Thus, after having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd.

Of course this “soft tyranny” can only sustain itself against revolt when the sheep don’t know they’re being shepherded. Good luck with that, Twitter. Have a nice day.
