“A Tectonic Shift”

There is a great disturbance in the force. For decades Israel has been able to confiscate homes, occupy land, and kill civilians. There’s never been much mainstream debate about this in the United States, the country that finances Israel’s atrocities with billions of dollars in taxpayer money. If someone makes the mistake of objecting to the violence with too much vigor, they’re promptly denounced as an antisemite and effectively censored.

For the last two weeks there’s been signs of a rapture. Thousands of people hit the streets in solidarity with Palestine, the media is actually occasionally criticizing Israel, and lawmakers are getting called out by their constituents. We’ve even seen some American celebrities show support for the Palestinian cause, which has long been perceived as a third rail cause capable of ending careers.

Then there’s the A-word. I remember attending an antiwar teach-in as a teenager shortly before the invasion of Iraq. One of the speakers brought up Israel and naturally compared it to South Africa. A lefty activist shot up his hand during the Q & A session. Okay Israel commits human rights violations, he conceded, but are we sure it’s an apartheid state? This month the word has been used be multiple House members, MSNBC anchors, and comedian John Oliver. This all comes after a April 27 Human Rights Watch report that referred to Israeli apartheid.

As usual the policy hasn’t caught up with the shifting opinion of the electorate, but it’s clearly becoming something of a headache for President Biden. As soon as he got off a plane in Detroit he was confronted by Rep. Rashida Tlaib and told that the administration must do more to protect Palestinian lives. Later, while behind the wheel of an electric truck at Ford Plant, a reporter asked Biden if he’d answer a question about Israel. “Not unless you get in front of the car as I step on it,” joked to uncomfortable laughter.

Tlaib, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez, and Rep. Pocan have now introduced legislation to block a new $735 million weapons sale to Israel. Today it was announced that Bernie Sanders is introducing a similar resolution in the Senate. There’s very little chance of this actually working but it might prompt some establishment Dems to daydream about running people over with an electric car.

Biden has had to come out and assure everyone that he’s been very stern in his conversations with Netanyahu. It seems a little counterintuitive to finance someone’s atrocities and then tell them you’re done messing around, but I digress. The fact that Biden feels compelled to leak this nonsense is progress of a kind.

All of these legislative moves must be understood within a wider context. They’re coming in response to immense pressure from Palestinian activists and their allies. It’s virtually impossible to envision any of this happening without that. Just look at Bernie’s comments on this issue from 2014 and compare them to today’s. The guy’s not on the verge of supporting BDS or anything, but he’s clearly been effectively pushed.

The pro-Israel crowd is becoming increasingly anxious about all this. A Yeshiva World News editorial laments the fact that Senator Chuck Schumer has seemingly disappeared when Israel needs him most. It used to be that Gaza got pummeled and the Senate Majority Leader sprinted to the nearest microphone to defend the slaughter. Now he’s presumably scouting the Atlanta Hawks rotation or looking out his window and seeing hundreds of Jewish New Yorkers demanding justice for Palestine. From the editorial:

His inexplicable silence comes as the Squad, made up of AOC, Rashida Tlaib & Ilhan Omar lead the charge against the Jewish state in Congress and across America. By remaining unchecked, these anti-Semites whip up lower level radical members of legislatures across the country.

A perfect storm of opposition to Israel is forming.

YWN has been receiving an inordinate amount of messages from Jews everywhere with the same damning question, where is Chuck Schumer? The senior Senator from New York has been silent and many have noticed it. Worse yet, AOC & company have noticed it too and are clearly taking full advantage.

Shortly after giving Mike Pompeo space to talk about COVID-19 being developed in a Chinese lab, the allegedly-canceled Bari Weiss used her massive platform to interview New York Rep. Ritchie Torres about the growing threat of Palestinian human rights. The pro-Israel Democrat has some real concerns:

“It feels like we are living through a tectonic shift,” Torres told Weiss. “We’re increasingly living in a world where support for Israel as a Jewish state, support for the American Israeli relationship, support even for a two state solution, is becoming heresy. And BDS is in danger of becoming orthodoxy, particularly within progressive circles.”

Agreed.

✉️  Over 350 faculty members from North Carolina colleges and universities have signed a statement condemning Israel’s attack on Gaza. “As academics based in the United States, we acknowledge our complicity in Israel’s oppression of the Palestinians, made possible through the unconditional political and material support of the U.S., continuing with the current administration,” it reads.

🏫 San Francisco Teachers Union has passed a resolution expressing solidarity with Palestine and supporting BDS.

🇷🇺 I went through MSNBC transcripts and discovered that Rachel Maddow has only mentioned Gaza on her show six times over the past decade.

🇮🇱 Sen. Todd Young (R-IN) called for ceasefire and then backtracked.

🏫 Students at John Jay College sent a letter to the school’s president calling for the institution to divest from Israel. “Future generations will remember the Palestinian liberation movement as we remember the movement against South African apartheid,” it reads. “Now is the time to take a bold and moral stance. Now is the time to end any and all support for Israel’s colonialism and apartheid.”

🇮🇱 Jewish Insider looks at some new polling on Democratic attitudes towards Israel: “While a plurality of registered Democratic voters — 36% — said they sympathized with both Israelis and Palestinians, 34% of respondents were either unfamiliar with or had no opinion on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, according to a Morning Consult/Politico survey of 1,992 voters. Moreover, the poll revealed that 18% of Democratic respondents sympathize more with Palestinians and 12% with Israelis. Those numbers were further underscored in an Economist/YouGov poll published yesterday, indicating that 35% of Democratic voters were equally sympathetic to Israelis and Palestinians while another 23% of Democrats sympathize with Palestinians and 16% with Israelis.”

🇮🇱 We’ve lived to see Steny Hoyer criticize AIPAC.

🇮🇱 Ignacio Miguel Delgado, the Middle East and North Africa representative for the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ): “In less than a week, Israel has bombed the offices of at least 18 media outlets, and it’s difficult to reach any conclusion other than that the Israeli military wants to shut down news coverage of the suffering in Gaza.”
