FEDERAL Opposition Leader Tony Abbott says a coalition government will deliver big increases in overseas aid spending but will not commit to a timetable.
The federal government confirmed on Monday it is pushing back its aid spending targets for a second time, saving the budget $3 billion, but angering charity groups.
Labor originally promised to increase aid to 0.5 per cent of gross national income by 2015/16.
It pushed the target out to 2016/17 last year and will push it out to 2017/18 in Tuesday’s budget.
Mr Abbott says the coalition is still committed to a 0.5 per cent target but calls it an “aspirational goal”.
“We do support it, we are committed to it,” he told reporters in Canberra on Monday.
“But obviously when we can achieve it depends very much on the state of the budget. We’ll be making our decisions about this when we see the state of the books.”
