Activists launch anti-GMO billboards promoting organic food, while warning about dangers of genetically engineered crops

(NaturalNews) The more that the global governing elite and agribusiness corporatists try to push genetically modified foods down our throats, the more resistance they meet, and that is a good thing, not only for humanity, but for the environment as well.

The most recent push-back is coming from what many might consider an unlikely source: Moms Across America, a non-profit organization whose motto is, “Empowered Moms, Healthy Kids.”

According to a press release, the group has launched another billboard campaign, in time for Independence Day. The billboards read, “Organic Food: FREEDOM from GMOs and Toxins,” and were printed in red, white and blue. The billboards also feature a mother and her baby, both smiling. The campaign began June 20, and runs for 30 days. It will be featured on 99 billboards and 55 posters in 12 mostly southern and Midwestern states (big agricultural areas). Moms Across America is hoping to raise awareness about how important pesticide- and herbicide-free foods are, not to mention those that have not been altered scientifically in any way.

“Unfortunately access to organic food is a socio-economic injustice issue,” Zen Honeycutt, the founder and director of Moms Across America, said. “In many lower income urban areas where the population tends to be primarily African American and Hispanic, organic food is almost no where to be found. This was not the case 40 years ago. Our grandmothers all served organic food.”

Over 650 lawsuits against Monsanto

Honeycutt and her group like to emphasize that it should be the right of all Americans to have the ability to freely choose organic foods, and to be able to avoid GMOs and toxic chemicals – something that is not currently possible, given the U.S. government and its agribusiness backers’ opposition to providing that choice.

The group notes that more than 85 percent of non-organic foods in the United States currently contain GMOs to some degree – crops that are grown to be resistant to herbicides or designed to ward off pests. But, such genetic alteration, as Natural News has reported, is dangerous to human health over the long term.

The genetic alteration, as Moms Across America points out, also means that Americans are ingesting more chemicals that are designed to kill life forms, and are neurotoxic, disruptive of hormones, likely carcinogenic and damaging to the immune system, than at any time in history. Organic crops just don’t engender those dangers, the group says, and it has had enough of seeing Americans poisoned.

“Skyrocketing health issues affect our loved ones, teachers, elected officials, children and unborn. Rising health care costs also affect everyone. We must protect Americans,” Honeycutt said.

Over the course of several years, more than 650 lawsuits have been filed against biotech and agribusiness giant Monsanto, maker of Roundup, the most widely used herbicide in the world. The active ingredient in Roundup is glyphosate, and in court cases it has been blamed for causing non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in people who used the product in public and private spaces as a weed killer.

‘We know we can do better’

What is unacceptable to Moms Across America is that Roundup is sprayed directly onto crops that our children and loved ones are subsequently fed: soy, corn, sugar, wheat and barley, all staples of the American diet and the prepackaged food industry.

Currently, the Environmental Protection Agency permits glyphosate to be used on 160 U.S. food and feed crops, and at levels much higher than those shown to cause destruction of gut bacteria and weakening of the immune system. Moms wants everyone to know that glyphosate does not wash off, dry off, or cook off, and as such, has been found in children’s urine, tap water, breast milk and many popular consumables, including wine and beer.

America prides itself on freedom,” says Honeycutt. “Are we all truly free if we cannot access food without GMOs and toxic chemicals? Don’t we have the right to expect that our food is safe? Don’t all American have the right to happiness and health? We know we can do better.”

We can, actually. A lot better. If Washington won’t act, we can, and that begins with growing our own, clean food, in the comfort of our homes.
