Afghan security forces have killed seven Taliban militants and arrested nearly 20 others during operations across the country.
Afghanistan’s Defense Ministry spokesman General Zahir Azimi announced on Sunday that at least seven anti-government armed militants were killed during the operations conducted by Afghan national army troops over the past 24 hours.
Azimi added that five of the militants, including a commander, were taken into custody during the operations.
Meanwhile, the Afghan Interior Ministry said in a separate statement that over a dozen Taliban militants were also detained during joint military operations in the same time period.
The interior ministry added that the militants were arrested in operations in the provinces of Kabul, Kandahar and Logar.
Afghan national security forces, according to local reports, also confiscated various sorts of weapons and explosives during the operations.
The interior ministry statement said Afghan national police forces discovered and seized 11 improvised explosive devices (IEDs) during operations in the provinces of Laghman, Baghlan, Takhar, Sar-e-Pul, Kandahar, Logar and Paktika.
Taliban have recently stepped up military offensive against US-led and Afghan forces, vowing a new wave of attacks across Afghanistan.
The militant group said it would use every possible tactic to inflict casualties on Afghan and US-led forces. They specifically mentioned insider attacks and bombings.
The United States and its allies invaded Afghanistan in 2001. The massive military occupation removed the Taliban from power, but the country remains gripped by insecurity.
