“Afghan President Hamid Karzai, leading a high-level delegation, left this morning for China to pay an official visit which is at the official invitation of his Chinese counterpart,” the presidential palace said in a statement on Wednesday.
According to the statement, President Karzai is expected to meet with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, Prime Minister Li Keqiang and other Chinese leaders during his trip to Beijing.
The leaders of the two countries are to discuss regional issues as well as political, military, economic and cultural cooperation during the meeting.
Signing three agreements with China, including providing financial aid to Afghanistan, extradition of prisoners and cooperation among the two countries’ universities are Afghan president’s top priorities, according to the presidential statement.
Karzai’s spokesman, Aimal Faizi, said on Tuesday that the Afghan president will also meet with members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to talk over “the issues of war against terrorism and extremism in the region.”
