Afghanistan’s Independent Election Commission has estimated that some 60 percent of eligible voters have cast their ballots in the presidential run-off.
According to Ahmad Yousuf Nouristani, the chairman of the commission, almost 7 million people have participated in the second round of election. Twelve million Afghans were eligible to vote.
The Afghans went to polling stations on June 14 to choose the successor to outgoing President Hamid Karzai between former Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah and economist Ashraf Ghani. The results are expected to be announced on July 2.
Meanwhile, Chief of Afghanistan’s National Directorate of Security (NDS) Rahmatullah Nabil stated on Saturday that Afghanistan’s national security forces have foiled at least 473 major terrorist attack plots during the nation’s presidential election day.
Nabil further added that the country’s national security forces also carried out at least 60 military operations to thwart planned attacks by Taliban militants.
Afghanistan’s Army Chief of Staff Gen. Sher Mohammad Karimi also announced that Afghan security forces suffered casualties during the election day mostly due to improvised explosive device (IED) attacks.
According to local press reports, at least 46 people were killed in separate militant attacks throughout Afghanistan on Saturday.
“Eleven police, 15 ANA (Afghanistan National Army) and 20 civilians were martyred,” Interior Minister Omar Daudzai told reporters, adding that about 60 militants were also killed.
