Afghanistan’s First Vice President Marshal Mohammad Qasim Fahim has passed away due to lingering ailment.
Afghan Presidential Palace in Kabul announced the death in a statement on Sunday.
President Hamid Karzai said in a condolence message that the death was a great loss to the country.
The president also expressed sympathy with the bereaved.
“The government of Afghanistan announced a three-day national mourning during which the national flag will be half-hoisted at home and Afghanistan diplomatic missions abroad,” the presidential palace further said in the statement.
Fahim, who was 56, was widely regarded as an influential figure who played an important role over the past 40 years in Afghanistan affairs.
A close aide to the late Afghan defense chief and national hero, Ahmad Shah Masoud, Fahim had fought against the invading forces of the former Soviet Union from 1979 to 1989 and later against the then Moscow-backed regime of Najibullah until its collapse in 1992.
He also fought against the Saudi- and Pakistani-backed Taliban regime until it was toppled after the US-led military invasion of the country in late 2001.
Fahim had served in different capacities, including defense minister and vice president, over the past 13 years in the post-Taliban Afghanistan.
