Coca-Cola Company has announced a new strategy to convince soda consumers that they are healthy, called “Taste the Feeling” campaign.

All Coke trademark brands will be featured in this marketing ploy that includes:

• Diet Coke
• Coke Zero
• Coke Life

Marcos de Quinto, chief marketing officer for Coca-Cola, confirmed in a public statement : “Coca-Cola is one brand with different variants, all of which share the same values and visual iconography.”

The driving force behind this announcement is the fact that Coca-Cola and other soda companies have seen a dramatic 25% drop in sales since 1998, and this particular business has begun scrambling for ways to appear more healthy to attract customers back.

Previous efforts to revive certain brands have failed. Diet Coke recently dropped 8% in the last quarter due to the perception of this product as being unhealthy.

And this perception is largely based on scientific studies showing that:

  • Older women who consume soda regularly are 30% more likely to succumb to cardiovascular disease and 50% more likely to die as a result of those diseases than older women who do so occasionally
  • Daily consumption of sodas sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup or sucrose can impair the ability to learn and remember information, particularly when consumption occurs during adolescence
  • 43% of children who consume just 1 soda a day are prone to expressing aggression, withdrawal and attention issues

To counter these studies, Coca-Cola has decided to focus on aesthetics in order to attract their customers. For example, new ad campaigns feature glass bottles, rather than the plastic ones, because “it adds an air of authenticity and history”.

In reality, the public have become aware of the dangers of Bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical used in the production of plastic bottles – the same bottles Coca-Cola uses to package their beverages.

BPA has been shown to:

Temporarily cause a spike in blood pressure
• Contribute to the increased risk of having a miscarriage
• Contribute to a 20% reduction in fertility of males exposed to the chemical
Linked to obesity in pubescent girls
