It doesn’t matter where you live, chances are that if you travel
anytime in the next week you will probably be seeing cops pulling people
over everywhere. ~ JG Vibes
News reports for almost every town in the country
are warning of DUI checkpoints, speed traps and an increase in police
activity for the whole week surrounding the Thanksgiving Holiday.
Most police departments depend on holidays to generate extra revenue
and there will be overtime crews out there with the specific intention
of pulling over average, nonviolent people to give them tickets.
They will be looking for people going over the speed limit, not
wearing their seat belts, they will be checking tail lights and
registration and they will even be setting up checkpoints in random
spots all throughout the country.
If you plan on traveling, be conscious of anything that you have with
you that you may need to keep hidden, avoid drinking and driving, and
try to remember that your chances of having a police encounter are much
greater this week than most other times throughout the year.
You always have the right to refuse a search, but cops are getting
really crazy these days and ripping people out of their cars forcefully
even if they refuse search, it has happened to me over a late emissions
renewal.
The right to refuse search should always be exercised, but definitely
don’t plan your life around the notion that the police will respect
your rights.
Another good resource that people are employing is cell phone cameras.
Now, at traffic stops people have the ability to film what’s going
on, so an objective view of what happened can be presented to the court,
because more often than not, the cops lie in court, and since the cops
and the judges both belong to the same organization they never seem to
disagree on much.
If you see a speed trap or checkpoint this week, make a post on your
favorite social network or forum and let your friends know, so they can
avoid potential danger.
For those of you who don’t think that police encounters are dangerous, I would point out the fact that statistically you are 8 times more likely to be killed by a police officer than a terrorist.
