Americans Say Last Farewell to Black Panther Party’s Abdullah Majid

nsnbc : Abdullah Majid, one of the United States’ countless political prisoners and former member of the Black Panther Party died on Sunday, April 3, 2016. Abdullah Majid spent more than three decades in prison. He was laid to rest on April 6.

Abdullah Majid_Black Panther Party_USA_Abdullah Majid was a native of Jamaica and lived in Queens, New York. In the 1960s Abdullah Majid became the target of the FBI’s COINTELPRO program which sought to, discredit, marginalize and criminalize inconvenient community and political activists and organizations, including Martin Luther King, the peace movement, the Black Panther Party, among many other.

Majid was detained and spent more than three decades in prison after three highly controversial trials.

Before joining the Black Panther Party, Majid worked in the Grassroots Advisory Council, an anti-poverty program. Later on he would become a member of the Republic of New Africa.

As a member of the Black Panther Party, Majid was involved in several of the Black Panther’s community-based projects which included free health clinics, free breakfast for children, in the struggle to decentralize New York City’s public schools and the New York Police Department (NYPD). It was within this context that Majid became a target of the FBI’s counter-intelligence program – COINTELPRO.

He was charged and convicted of murder and the attempted murder of a police officer. Abudllah Majid and his co-defendant Basher Hameed were forced into three separate trials. The first trial ended in a hung jury, with the jury being divided along racial lines. The second trial was declared a mistrial by the judge immediately after the jury acquitted Basheer of the murder charge.

Both Abdullah Majid and Besheer Hameed were finally convicted in a third and highly controversial trial. Abdul was sentenced to 33 years to life. Besheer died in prison in 2008. Abdullah Majid passed away on Sunday, April 3, 2016. He was laid to rest on April 6.
