Findings from a recent poll show more and more Americans are becoming tired of their government’s interventionist policies around the globe.
The new Wall Street Journal/NBC News survey shows that nearly half of Americans want Washington to “be less active in world affairs” while only 19 percent call for a more active role.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the findings are indicative of “an anti-interventionist current that sweeps across party lines” in the United States.
“The juxtaposition of an America that wants to turn inward and away from world affairs, and a strong feeling of powerlessness domestically, is a powerful current that so far has eluded the grasp of Democrats and Republicans,” said Democratic pollster Fred Yang.
“The message from the American public to their leaders in this poll seems to be: You need to take care of business here at home,” Yang added.
The survey also showed that approval of US President Barack Obama’s handling of foreign policy plunged to the lowest level of his presidency, with just 38 percent approving.
Another recent poll conducted by the Washington Post and ABC News also revealed this week that Obama’s approval rating fell to 41 percent, down from 46 percent for the first three months of the year.
The Washington Post/ABC News poll showed Americans dislike Obama’s policies on economy, healthcare, and the crisis in Ukraine.
The results of the recent polls come at a time Washington is accusing Russia of “illegal intervention in Ukraine and provocative acts that undermine Ukraine’s democracy.”
The Obama administration has so far announced three rounds of sanctions against Russian officials and businesses and has threatened Moscow that the US could impose sanctions on key sectors of the Russian economy.
Paul Craig Roberts, an American economist who was an Assistant Secretary of the Treasury Department during the presidency of Ronald Reagan, told Press TV in an email on Monday that “Russia will benefit from the sanctions, because the sanctions will encourage and hasten Russia’s withdrawal from Washington’s exploitative system.”
