Analyst: US seeking war in Syria

America’s demand that Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad be removed from power shows that the US is “laying out the ground work for war rather than for peace,” an American political and peace activist says.

“If the United States insists Assad can’t be part of any government, [it] really shows this is part of long term agenda of the United States to put in place a government that’s friendly to the United States,” said Kevin Zeese.

Zeese criticized the Geneva II Conference on Syria, which aims to end the nearly three-year-old Syrian conflict, for excluding Iran, a key regional player, from the talks and pushing for war rather than for peace.

The conference has “some really serious problems,” Zeese said. “Our fear is that this is peace conference that’s really a war conference.”

The Geneva II talks have already hit a deadlock amid sharp differences between the two sides.

The Syrian government insists that Syrians would choose a political system without “imposed formulas from other countries.” It says the only way to decide the future of the country is through holding an election.

Congress has recently approved funding for US weapons deliveries to the Syrian militants fighting against the Syrian government.

Reports suggested earlier this week that US lawmakers have voted behind closed doors to fund the arms deliveries through the end of the 2014 US fiscal year, which ends on September 30.
