Anastasiades wins Cyprus presidency

According to the final results from Sunday’s ballot, Anastasiades won with 57.5 percent, ahead of Communist-backed rival Stavros Malas, who received 42.5 percent of the votes.

“I state that we will stand by the new president if we assess his actions and policies to be for the good of the country because the unity of our people is what’s most important right now,” said Malas as he conceded the election.

“At the same time, we will be strong critics of whichever actions and decisions that we deem not to serve the country’s best interests,” he added.

Anastasiades has said he favors a quick deal with the European Union (EU) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) lenders on a bailout to rescue the country’s economy.

It is reported that Cyprus needs up to 17 billion euros (USD 23 billion) in aid, almost equivalent to the size of its entire economy, raising concerns whether the country would be able to repay in the future.

The country is experiencing its worst financial crisis in four decades, with unemployment at a record high of 15 percent.

The European Commission reported that the economy of Cyprus declined by 2.3 percent in 2012.

The Commission predicted that the country’s economy would continue to shrink by 3.5 percent this year and keep on contracting until 2016.
