Announcing the Mondoweiss Book Club

We’re excited to introduce the Mondoweiss Book Club. It’s a six-month, go at your own pace program, featuring works of fiction by Palestinian and Arab authors.

The book club will begin January 4, 2021, just in time to cozy up with a new novel to start the New Year.

When you subscribe, each month we will email you an excerpt from a novel and a discount code for purchasing the book at our club rate directly from the publisher. There are no hassles, no homework, just searing works of fiction we find enriching. We also plan to publish interviews with authors that correspond to the books in our club, and other treats, so stay tuned.

Against the Loveless World, by Susan Abulhawa

As a coming attraction we’re please to announce the first installment of the book club will be Susan Abulhawa’s “Against the Loveless World.” The novel follows Nahr, the middle-aged female protagonist, born to Palestinian parents in Kuwait as her life is upended by a string of tragedies and traumas that are the echos of geopolitical currents.

At the start of the month Phil Weiss interviewed Abulhawa about the novel for our podcast. It’s worth going back and listening to again. He describes the book as,

“A wonderful and well-told tale about an adventurer living on the margins of respectability in Kuwait, then Amman, then the West Bank. Nahr, the hero, is by turns a good wife, a sex worker, a victim of assault, a thief, a trespasser, a saboteur, and so on. And all the time she is cracking wise and giving us the gossip.”

The book received strong reviews when it was first published. The New York Times praised the book:

“Not all communities are willing to listen to these messy narratives of displacement. In our current climate of isolationism, the transnational storyteller must do more than entertain — she must educate. In response to this demand, Abulhawa has created a spirited protagonist who lives invisibly and in opposition to her ‘loveless world,’ telling her own story on her own terms lest either her comings or goings be forgotten.”

We want to give you more access to the novels that pull at our heartstrings or give us a hearty laugh. We passionately believe literature can distill complex sentiments beyond the capacity of news.

Let us know if you have any recommendations for titles you want to see in the book club, or any thoughts you have while reading. We want to hear from you, and will publish responses from readers. You can reach us at [email protected].
