Anti-Russia sentiments threaten Europe

Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has warned that rising anti-Russian sentiments over the Ukraine crisis are threatening Europe’s stability.

Lavrov’s remarks came on Friday, as the United States threatened Russia with more sanctions over the Ukraine crisis.

“The current inflaming of anti-Russian sentiments…carries an obvious threat to European stability” Lavrov added.

In addition, Lavrov stated that the crisis in Ukraine can only be defused if attempts to “legitimize the Maidan (Kiev) government at any cost” are stopped.

Tensions have been rising between Moscow and the West over Ukraine in recent weeks with Western governments stepping up pressure on Russia. The Western governments accuse Moscow of bullying Ukraine’s new pro-West government.

US Secretary of State John Kerry has threatened Russia with more sanctions, accusing Moscow of “an illegal and illegitimate effort to destabilize” Ukraine.

This comes as pro-Russian demonstrations have been held in the eastern and southern Ukrainian cities of Donetsk, Luhansk, and Kharkiv, where protesters seized government buildings, demanding a referendum on integration into the Russian Federation.

Pro-Russian demonstrations gained momentum in the Eastern European country after Crimea declared independence from Ukraine and formally applied to become part of the Russian Federation following a referendum on March 16.

The move sparked angry reactions from the United States and the European Union, both imposing sanctions against a number of Russian officials and authorities in Crimea.
