Appeal court hears Saudi embassy attackers’ final plea

IRNA – The Appeal Court on Monday heard the Saudi embassy attackers’ final plea and their lawyers’ appeals.

Speaking to IRNA, Mostafa Sha’abani, the attorney at law of some defendants said the appeal court number 53 listened to appeals submitted by 10 of the Saudi embassy attackers who have protested the trial court verdict.

“We should wait for the final decision of court,” he noted.

The attorney at law of some of defendants had said in previous interview with IRNA that the trial court had issued decree for 19 suspects of attacking the Saudi embassy.

Five Saudi embassy attackers have been sentenced to six months in jail and others have been convicted to suspended imprisonment or acquitted.

Four of the defendants are clerics and therefore, they have been trialed in the Special Clerical Court.

The first trial session of the attackers of Saudi embassy in Tehran was held on July 2016.

The Iran-Saudi Arabia diplomatic ties were cut in January 2016 after a group of protestors attacked Saudi embassy in Tehran and its consulate in the northeastern city of Mashad following the execution of the prominent Shiite cleric Sheikh Nimr Al-Nimr in Saudi Arabia.

The severance of diplomatic ties between Tehran and Riyadh was also resulted from a series of events including Saudis’ mishandling of a human tragedy in Mina (September 2015) that killed thousands of Muslims, more than 460 Iranians, and Saudis’ failure to guarantee safety of the Iranian pilgrims.

The event initiated an international wave to condemn the incompetence and mismanagement of the Saudi officials in administrating Muslims’ largest annual ritual.

On September 30, 2015, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei stressed formation of a fact-finding committee, comprising Muslim countries including Iran, to probe the case of Mina tragedy.
