Art thieves exploited Rotterdam gallery’s automatic safety system

“The theft on Monday night suggests the intruders forced the lock after the unbolting, presumably quickly,” said a statement from the museum.

Police have released security camera footage which shows the two thieves entering through the back door before disappearing from the camera’s field of view. Seconds later, they come back into view carrying bulky objects, and leave the same way they entered.

The stolen paintings were from the prestigious Triton Foundation art collection, which had never been exhibited before and were on display as part of the museum’s 20th anniversary celebrations.

The police have admitted that they have little more to go on than the type of “odd bags” that one was bigger than the other.

Chris Marinello, executive director of the Art Loss Register, which tracks down stolen paintings, said that time was of the essence in catching the thieves.

“We either see artwork being recovered very quickly after the theft or decades later, very little in-between,” he said.
