The Australian has asked Greg Barns, former Australian republican Movement chief and barrister, to be his campaign director for WikiLeaks Party in the September 14 parliament upper house election.
“It’s most definitely a serious campaign. He does attract support from across the political spectrum. The party will offer a refreshing change from the Australian government culture of secrecy,” Barns told Australian radio.
Assange has been holed up in the embassy and has secured political asylum from Ecuador after he lost a legal battle on June 19 against extradition to Sweden where he is wanted for questioning over sexual abuse allegations.
The London Metropolitan Police has kept the embassy under 24-hour watch over the past nine months at a huge cost, which the Scotland Yard said back in February has already amounted to £2.3 million.
Assange’s move seems more of a political stunt to show his attitude toward Britain than a serious campaign, as analysts say his Senate bid is a long shot.
However, in case he is elected, he will be able to take his seat from July 1, 2014 only if he can exit Britain and enter his home country.
