Australia conservatives headed for win

Voting stations in the crucial states of Queensland and New South Wales along with Victoria, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory closed at 6:00 pm (0800 GMT) on Saturday, while those on the west coast would close two hours later.

Early exit polls show that Abbott’s Liberal-National coalition is on its way to winning the elections.

According to pre-election opinion polls, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s Labor Party would lose 21 seats to be left with just 51 seats. The independents would have two seats.

The Labor Party has been in office since 2007, but is now facing the prospect of losing power amid deep voter frustration over years of party instability.
