AN Afghan child has been airlifted to hospital after being the victim of a suspected attack by an Australian Defence Force dog.
Defence yesterday said an investigation had begun into the recent incident in Afghanistan when the child was believed to have been bitten by the Australian force elements search dog.
An ADF spokesman said the child and his mother were evacuated by aero-medical helicopter to a nearby medical facility after the incident.
The child was assessed to be in a stable condition and was expected to make a full recovery.
“Defence deeply regrets any injuries to civilians,” the spokesman said.
“Both the child and his mother have returned to their home. A follow on medical appointment will occur to ensure the child’s recovery continues.”
The spokesman said any further details could not be provided because the operation during which the incident occurred was ongoing.
“In line with policy, Defence is now investigating the incident to ensure that all known facts are understood and assessed against the conditions on the ground that day,” he said.
“Defence will provide further detail on the incident when the operation has concluded, and again once the investigation has been completed and its findings have been considered.”
