The unemployment rate in Austria is at a record high, with almost half a million people currently being jobless, Press TV reports.
The unemployment rate in Austria increased to 9.80 percent in January of 2014 from 9.50 percent in December of 2013.
At the beginning of February this year, 450,000 Austrians were jobless — the highest unemployment rate since the Second World War.
“The unemployment is structured on the foreign population. Another group that is facing problem is the elderly population. We have seen increases in youth unemployment,” said Peter Huber from the Austrian Institute of Economic Research.
It is expected that around 10,000 to 15,000 more people will be unemployed over the course of 2014.
The length of the time that it takes the jobless to find work has also increased to a current average of 95 days.
“There are not enough jobs to bring all the people into work right now, but we really try our best to prevent long-term unemployment… because if a person is long-term unemployed, he won’t find a job in good economic times [either],” said Johannes Kopf with the Public Employment Service Austria, the country’s leading provider of labor-market related services.
The Austrian economy has not been growing as fast as expected and at the same time there has been an increase in labor supply from both within the country and abroad.
Reasons for the increase in labor supply include the existence of better childcare enabling more women to return to work, an increase in immigration from neighboring countries and changes to the pension system resulting in later retirement.
“If you do not invest, we will have a big problem, so the question for this new government will be: do we take the new and fresh money for jobs or not? Do we have the commitment to invest in new jobs?,” said Judith Schwentner, a member of Austria’s parliament.
