LABOR will abolish the baby bonus in tonight’s Budget.
Wayne Swan will make the announcement as well as promise a surplus in 2016/17.
The Howard-era income-based baby bonus, worth $5000 per eligible child, will be axed.
Parents however will get a boost to Family Tax Benefit part A worth up to $2000.
For those families not eligible for paid parental leave they will get $2000 for first child and $1000 for subsequent children.
Many have been calling for an end to the baby bonus, including key independent Tony Windsor.
This morning he said: ”Hopefully that disappears or at least the nappies taken off.”
Labor will also promise an infrastructure package totalling $24 billion over five years in the Budget tonight.
Mr Swan will pledge for the Budget to be balanced in 2015/16 with a surplus the following year, earlier than many economists predicted.
