(Scroll down for video) A potentially breakthrough in the treatment of the AIDS virus was recently announced.

A Mississippi baby born with the AIDS virus seems to have been cured after being treated with an aggressive regimen of drugs immediately after his birth two years ago, an unusual case that could trigger changes to the treatments of hundreds of thousands of babies born in the world every year with the AIDS virus.

The findings were published on Sunday by researchers and marked only the second documented case ever of a human patient who was cured of the infection. The first, known as the Berlin patient was cured as a result of a bone marrow transplant several years ago.

The new case was discovered after the girl’s mother stopped treatment and doctors realized that the virus was undetectable even without medication. HIV patients usually must take medication for the rest of their lives.
