Bangladesh landslides toll rises to 108

The region’s chief administrator, Sirajul Haq Khan, said on Thursday that the death toll from rainstorm-triggered mudslides rose to 108.

Rescuer forces also have been called to stop rescue operations in the districts of Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar and Bandarban.

“We have called off the rescue operations as there’s nobody else reported missing,” Khan said.

The three days of intense monsoon rains and flash floods have forced than 60,000 people to flee the regions.

Reports say the people have been buried alive under tons of mud during their sleep. Tens of homes have also been buried under mud.

Some areas received up to 40 centimeters of rain over a 12-hour period on Tuesday.

Over the past years, monsoon rains have caused deadly landslides, claiming many lives in Bangladesh.

In June 2007, at least 130 people were killed in landslides in Chittagong.
