Barbara Walters is retiring after 52 years of broadcasting

The Huffington Post reported on March 28 that Barbara Walters is set to retire from broadcasting in May 2014. Walters wanted to make the announcement herself in a few week on “The View” that she started in 1997. However, someone else leaked the news.

Since her retirement is more than a year away, plans are to do a year’s worth of special events about Walters’ long broadcasting career.

The 83-year-old has had several health scares in recent years, from her heart surgery in 2010 to her bout with chicken pox and a concussion earlier this year.

When she does retire, it will be the end of an iconic and historic career. Walters has held just about every possible high-profile position in television news, from her first major job as anchor of “Today” to her decades-long tenure with ABC News.

Walters is widely recognized as a trailblazer for women in journalism.

Look through the list and see some of the many positions Walters has held since she began her career as a receptionist. Since then she has interviewed every Unites States President who has been in office.

During the next year, there will be plenty of specials honoring Walters. Watch for them.
