The Barnett government cannot be trusted to keep household charges under control and has been reckless in managing the state budget, new West Australian Opposition Leader Mark McGowan says.
Setting out his party’s agenda for 2012 in parliament on Wednesday, Mr McGowan said the government had made a series of decisions that showed it was “anything but caring” and was more interested in “the big end of town” rather than helping families.
“Western Australians are facing greater hardships than in 2008 as a result of the Barnett government’s 57 per cent increase to the cost of electricity and more than 40 per cent increase to the cost of water,” he said.
“The Barnett government cannot be trusted to keep household charges under control and Labor will continue to hold it to account for its arrogant refusal to provide families with financial relief after three years of price hikes.”
Mr McGowan said Labor would encourage emerging industries and ensure local jobs flowed from WA’s large-scale resources projects.
“Despite the Barnett government’s refusal to support Labor’s Skilled Local Jobs Bills in 2011, Labor will continue to fight to ensure all Western Australians reap the benefits of the resources boom.”
Mr McGowan said Premier Colin Barnett had been reckless in the management of the state’s budget and his proposal for a future fund was a “stunt’ when WA was billions of dollars in debt.
He said that under the Barnett government, truancy and absenteeism in schools had soared.
“The community does not feel safe under the Barnett government, after repeated incidents of violent crime in homes and on the streets, yet it has closed down suburban police stations.”
Mr McGowan also said the government had failed to develop public transport infrastructure to keep up with population growth and increased congestion.
“The Barnett government has its priorities all wrong. It has chosen to pursue its pet projects instead of the needs of the community and core services.”
Labor would work to ensure Western Australians received their share of the benefits of the state’s resources boom, Mr McGowan said.
