nsnbc : Self-defense forces are currently fighting an assault from helicopters and an airborne unit of troops dispatched by the post-coup government in Kiev, reports a spokesman for the self-proclaimed People’s Republic of Donetsk in southeastern Ukraine. The protesters demand a referendum about regional autonomy within a federalized Ukraine.
The government in Kiev which came to power in an armed coup d’état on February 21 has according to southeastern Ukrainian and official Russian sources deployed more than 11,000, according to the Russian defense ministry 15.000 troops to southeastern Ukraine to conduct what it calls phase two of anti-terrorism operations.
When the helicopter landed it was fired at with a rocket-propelled grenade reported a local resident to nsnbc. The Russian Ria Novosti cites self-defense forces as saying that they opened fire on the helicopter as soon as it had landed and troops set foot on the ground.
The spokesman for the Donetsk self-defense forces reported that there have been dead and wounded, adding that they had to abandon their first line of defense and to withdraw to their second defensive line. Barricades are reportedly defended by 50 volunteer activists armed with pistols and sub-machine guns. The weapons are not military grade weapons but from local police stations said a local resident to nsnbc.
No reinforcements can be sent to the 50 activists, because all of the volunteers are busy with defending the city of Slaviansk, said the self-defense spokesman. A local resident informed nsnbc that troops deployed by Kiev have almost completely encircled Slaviansk, so it has become almost impossible to get in or out of the city. The troops are laying siege on the city with armored personnel carriers, tanks as well as artillery pieces he said.
Another group of pro-reform and pro federalization protesters is guarding a large arms depot 50 kilometers southeast of Slaviansk near Soledar. The depot, which has been built into the shafts of an old salt mine, contains mainly weapons which have been stored there since World War II. Activists have expressed that they have surrounded the depot so as to prevent that the weapons fall into the hands of radical nationalists and neo-Nazis from Svoboda, Pravy Sector or other of the radical groups which currently are part of the post-coup government in Kiev.
At a press conference, the commander of the self-defense forces in the Donetsk region, Igor Strelkov, presented three members of the so-called A-Team of the Ukrainian Security Service (USS) which have been captured. The three admitted that they had been sent to the region with the task to kidnap one of the protest leaders.
The three were arrested while they were heading to Gorlovka, in the Donetsk region, said Strelkov, displaying the men, their weapons and documents to the media. The men raised suspicion when they hesitated to show their identity documents at a checkpoint. One of the detained A-Team members indicated that they had not exactly volunteered for the mission, and that one had let them know that they should think about the fact that they had family members left behind in Kiev, who could suffer consequences if they were not following orders.
Reportedly, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) stated before, that seven men who also were arrested in possession of weapons were “military observers”. The seven arrested men were under suspicion of being security service agents or spies.
Weapons and ID cards of the three men whom self-defense forces newly arrested, showed clearly that they belonged to the Ukrainian Security Service. The self-defense volunteers however, also suspect them to be spies for NATO, which, on the other hand, has not been confirmed either.
The Russian news agency RIA Novosti has obtained satellite images which show the buildup of Ukrainian military forces and heavy military equipment in the proximity of the Russian border as well as in the outskirts and suburbs of Slaviansk.
The news agency quotes a source at the Russian Defense Ministry as commenting on the photos.
The Defense Ministry spokesman said that the photos clearly illustrate that a military force is being staged in the suburbs of Slaviansk with a troop size and composition sufficient wipe out the city and its residents.
The source said, that aaccording to his data, the grouping is composed of more than 15,000 Ukrainian military servicemen and reservists. There are around 160 tanks, 230 infantry combat vehicles and armored personnel carriers, as well as no less than 150 rifles, mine throwers and RMs (multiple-launch rocket systems of Grad and Smerch types). The Defense Ministry source stressed that:
«Such concentration of troops in one district and the potential of the self-defense units’ forces are disparate, the latter being armed only with small amount of pistols and shotguns”.
With between 15.ooo troops near Slviansk and thousands of others dispatched to other locations in Ukraine’s southeastern region, some of them massing near the Russian border, the Russian military is conducting readiness drills in its border region with, according to some estimates, up to 40.000 troops.
Some military experts warn that Kiev and NATO could start a bloodbath in Slaviansk so as to force Russia’s hand to invade Ukrainian territory. An expert in international law informed nsnbc that a limited Russian deployment so as to prevent the development of anarchy along the Russian border would be consistent with international principles and laws, not to be confused with an invasion, not even an invasion under the questionable “responsibility to protect” principle.
It is especially noteworthy that the current government in Kiev came to power in an armed coup, that it deposed the President and government in a parliamentary vote that was, literally, held at gunpoint, and that the use of Ukraine’s military against Ukrainian citizens is not only illegal under Ukrainian, but under international law. Moreover, it is noteworthy that members of the government in Kiev, repeatedly, have threatened and encouraged the use of armed force against Russian speaking Ukrainians and against Russia.
Some analysts warn that it is unlikely that Russia, Kiev, or NATO members aim at starting a war, but that one shot fired in anger, could ignite a powder keg and start a chain reaction that could be extremely difficult to stop and which almost invariably would result in massive loss of lives.
