In a statement, the Innovative Minds (inminds) campaign group said the demonstration will be held on April 7 to blast the broadcaster for enforcing a reporting blackout on any coverage of Palestinian prisoners, who have been refusing food for months over the conditions of their detention by the Israeli regime.
The rally dubbed “Over 250 days of silence on plight of Palestinian hunger strikers” is part of a series of protests outside the BBC, demanding the corporation cover the story of the hunger strikers.
More than 4,500 Palestinian prisoners are held in Israeli prisons, many of them without charge or trial. Among the inmates are Ayman Sharawneh, Samer Al-Issawi, Jaafar Ezzedine, and Tareq Qaa’dan, who have been refusing food for months to protest against their administrative detention by the Israeli regime.
The controversial practice, which is used by Tel Aviv, allows Israeli authorities to incarcerate Palestinians indefinitely without charging them or holding a trial.
Sharawna, who started the protest action in July 2012, was released earlier this month after 261 days without food under the agreement which exiled him from the Israel-occupied West Bank to the Gaza Strip for 10 years.
But Al-Issawi, who has refused food for nearly 250 days, rejected the deal of release with condition of forced deportation, reaffirming that he will continue his “hunger strike until either freedom and return to Jerusalem or martyrdom.”
Pro-Palestine campaigners staged an earlier protest outside the BBC office in the British capital on February 18, calling the broadcaster to end its biased approach toward the news coverage of hunger-striking Palestinian prisoners.
