nsnbc : Belgian police and the Belgian judiciary cracked up an international drug ring that sold MDMA – XTC, better known as ecstasy via the internet, making the goods look as if they were sent from legitimate companies for customers in the United States.
Belgian police informed the press that the drug ring sold its illicit merchandise via the so-called dark web. Belgian police launched an investigation in 2014 after several of the legitimate companies reported that they had received return packages which they never actually sent and with goods that were not part of these companies inventory.
One of the first companies to report surprising irregularities was a company from the East Flemish town of Sint-Niklaas. The company reported to police that it had received an undeliverable parcel that had been sent back from the United States.
The company noted that it never had sent the parcel in the first place and that the parcel, on inspection, turned out to contain suspicious crystals. These crystals turned out to be MDMA / XTC. The parcel contained about 1 kilogram of the crystals, enough to produce some 10,000 ecstasy pills.
A spokesman for Belgium’s judiciary told the press that several other companies in Brussels and Bruges, West Flandern turned out to experience similar irregularities with returned parcels that contained substances that appeared to contain substances that looked suspiciously like drugs.
The drug ring used the alias “The Italian Mafia in Brussels” and sold its merchandise through several marketplaces and on-line stores on the dark web. The gang used bitcoin for payments. The drug ring sent its parcels from Belgium, France and Germany.
Belgian police arrested six suspects. most of them are from the Bruges area. The suspects have been detained. Other suspects have been detained in Romania and in the United States.
MDMA or ecstasy is primarily produced in the Netherlands and in Belgium. The dug is not physically addictive but has a number of adverse effects. A relatively large number of ecstasy users have suffered from depression after use of MDMA /XTX. In many cases users experienced long-term, moderate to severe clinical depressions even after short-term use.
Ecstasy is widely known and used as a “party drug”. Pure MDMA can be relatively harmless in comparison to many other synthetic drugs. However, it is more often than not cut with other substances like amphetamine, LSD, mescaline.
One of the serious risks associated with the drug, purchased on the black market is that it often is being laced with amphetamine, cocaine or heroin, making the user physically and psychologically dependent on the high without necessarily recognizing the effects of this dependency has opioid or cocaine dependency.
