Bendigo MP Steve Gibbons to retire

FEDERAL Labor MP Steve Gibbons will not stand for his seat of Bendigo at the next election.

The Victorian MP announced his retirement on his website today, saying the current political situation had no bearing on his decision.

“All governments’ fortunes ebb and flow and the current situation is no different to the position the Howard government was experiencing in 2001,” his statement says.

The Victorian branch of the ALP was starting its preselection process and he wanted to give the new candidate as long as possible to build a profile.

Mr Gibbons has held Bendigo since 1998.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard said she was sorry Mr Gibbons had flagged his retirement from the parliament.

“As the longest-serving federal MP for Bendigo since federation, Steve leaves a strong legacy,” she said in a statement.

“He has been the best kind of local member – representing his party in his community, and representing his community in the parliament.”

Ms Gillard said she was sure the MP was looking forward to some good times “noodling” on his bass guitar and working on his motorbikes.
