Berlin: Leaving EU harms UK mil. status

De Maiziere, who is a close ally of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, said in an interview with The Guardian that the military aspect is important “for us especially”, adding British Prime Minister David Cameron has failed to consider that aspect.

“It [leaving the EU] would weaken the British influence within NATO…. I am talking about British influence beyond its own borders.
I think it is part of the British tradition that Britain has to play a role in the world. Outside the EU it would not lose a role, but it would reduce their own influence,” the German minister said.

Cameron has pledged to hold a referendum on Britain’s continued membership in the EU if his Conservative party wins the next election.

De Maiziere also criticized Britain and France for cutting their military spending while urging Germany to spend more on defense within the NATO and within the European Union, respectively.

“If we keep the line, and they don’t, I would like to learn the [reasons why] you hear sometimes we should have more commitments than they themselves. I am speaking frankly,” he said.

Germany has repeatedly warned Britain against pushing ahead with the referendum saying it will harm London and others in the EU.

Chair of Germany’s European affairs committee Gunther Krichbaum warned earlier in January that Britain should avoid blackmailing the EU by an in-out referendum as it could be politically and economically disastrous to both.

He warned at the time that “you cannot create a political future if you are blackmailing other states”.
