Berlusconi defiant ahead of senate vote

The comments came just days prior to the parliamentary vote, which will likely see him ousted over his conviction for tax fraud and a four-year jail sentence, which was commuted to a year under house arrest or in community service.

The three-time leader also said that President Giorgio Napolitano should pardon him to spare him the embarrassment of performing community service, describing it as a “humiliation.”

“The president should not hesitate even for a moment to prevent the disgrace of community service, even without me asking him to.”

Berlusconi, whose centre-right is joined in a fragile coalition with the Democratic Party, has indicated that he would join the opposition if lawmakers vote on November 27 to exclude from the senate.

However, the move would not bring down the coalition government as a group of center-right lawmakers has said they would support the government.

Last week, the group led by Angelino Alfano, who is the country’s deputy prime minister and interior minister, split from Berlusconi’s party and formed form a new one, named New Center-Right.

The former premier has seen his influence weakened. Last month, Berlusconi was forced to abandon his bid to topple Prime Minister Enrico Letta after more than 40 of his lawmakers said they would defy him and instead vote in support of the coalition government.

The confidence vote came after the 77-year-old media magnate ordered his five ministers on September 28 to resign from the government in a dispute over his fraud conviction.

The tax fraud case is Berlusconi’s first confirmed criminal conviction against him and one of many legal battles he has faced in his two decades in politics.

In June, Berlusconi was sentenced to seven years and a lifetime ban from holding public positions for inappropriate relations with an under-age girl and then using his influence in an attempt to cover it up.

Previous charges against Berlusconi included Mafia collusion, false accounting, tax fraud, corruption and bribing police officers and judges.
