Biden apologies to UAE on ISIL remarks

US Vice President Joe Biden has apologized to the United Arab Emirates for his comments that suggested that the kingdom supported the ISIL terrorists in Syria.

On Sunday, Biden telephoned Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the crown prince of Abu Dhabi and deputy supreme commander of the UAE Armed Forces, and clarified that he did not mean to imply in his remarks that the UAE was supporting the militants in Syria, the White House said.

In an address to students at the Institute of Politics at Harvard University on Thursday, Biden said that US allies, including Turkey, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, had funded and armed terrorists linked to Al-Qaeda fighting against the government of Syrian President Bashar a-Assad.

He said “our biggest problem is our allies,” adding that “they poured hundreds of millions of dollars and thousands of tons of weapons into anyone who would fight against Assad.”

Emirates Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Anwar Gargash however called Biden’s comments “far from the truth,” and requested a “formal clarification” from Biden.

Biden clarified his remarks and recognized the UAE’s “strong steps” to counter terrorism and participation in US-led airstrikes against ISIL militants.

The US and the UAE, a key partner in President Barack Obama’s coalition against ISIL, along with Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar and Jordan have been conducting airstrikes against ISIL militants inside Syria since last month without any authorization from Damascus or a UN mandate.

On Saturday, Biden apologized to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the White House said in an earlier statement.

“The vice president apologized for any implication that Turkey or other allies and partners in the region had intentionally supplied or facilitated the growth of ISIL or other violent extremists in Syria,” the White House said.

According to reports, Erdogan had demanded an apology from Biden, saying that he “will be history for me if he has indeed used such expressions.”

Commenting on the report, international lawyer Barry Grossman said, “It is a bit late to wheel out the US political system’s highest-ranking nobody – the vice president – in order to lament the conduct of US client states in the region which have been deeply involved in the US-conceived Syria project which aims to assassinate Bashar al-Assad.”

“In diplomatic terms, since Biden’s remarks were wrapped up in throw-away lines delivered to a student audience rather than part of an official statement, they are of no significance and can only be treated as part of the cut and thrust of politics,” he told Press TV on Sunday.

“Even the generally pro-‘Complex’ media stateside has long been publishing exposés about the role of Qatar, the KSA, Kuwait and, yes, Turkey too, in funding, arming and supporting the same insurgents who are now rallying around the al-Nusra Front and ISIL flags,” Grossman said.
