Independent MLC John Darley has introduced a bill which seeks to crack down on online predators.
His private member’s bill was prompted by the murder of South Australian teenager Carly Ryan.
The man convicted of her murder posed online as a teenage boy.
Mr Darley said his bill would create a new offence if adults lied about their age or identity to a child online and subsequently met them.
He says a maximum 10-year jail term would apply if there were any intent to commit a criminal offence.
“Parents and relatives should watch what their children are doing on the internet and monitor what’s going on and if they are contacted by people who are not outlining what their true age is or their identity is to report those issues,” he said.
A staff member of Attorney-General John Rau said the Government will consider whether to back the legislation.
