Killed: Billy Cooney, 19, who was twice the drink drive limit, died from serious head injuries
A drunken teenager snapped a picture of his speedometer reading 105mph just moments before crashing on a roundabout.
Billy Cooney, 19, who was twice the drink drive limit, died from serious head injuries after his Vauxhall Corsa ploughed into metal railings in Greater Manchester.
When police officers checked the teenager’s mobile phone, they found a picture on his Blackberry showing the speedometer, taken just minutes before the car crashed on the Elk Mill roundabout at the Oldham end of the A627M.
Mr Cooney, of Norfolk Crescent, Failsworth, had been on his way home at around 5am from a night out.
Police crash investigators said there was no evidence another vehicle was involved but Mr Cooney was found to be twice the drink-drive limit in a post-mortem blood test.
An inquest at Rochdale Coroners’ Court was told how Mr Cooney had probably lost control of the car close to a slip road before flipping 180 degrees and ploughing into metal railings.
A lorry driver and an off-duty police officer were first on the scene to try and help Mr Cooney, who was unconscious in his vehicle.
Police officers and paramedics arrived but Mr Cooney, who was studying at Bolton University, went into cardiac arrest while he was being freed from the wreckage.
He was rushed to Royal Oldham Hospital but died shortly after.
Sgt Garry Lyle, a crash scene investigator for Greater Manchester Police, told the inquest that pictures had been recovered from the mobile phone.
Tragic: The scene of the accident on the A627M in Greater Manchester
He said one showed the dashboard with speeds of 105mph taken at 4.59am.
He added: ‘I asked for the phone to be recovered to see if there were any phone clues, to see if there were any photos or records indicating if anybody was using the mobile phone at the time of the collision.
‘The photos suggest quite a high speed.’
Mr Cooney, a former Failsworth school pupil, had survived the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami while holidaying on the island of Ko Phi Phi in Thailand.
Tributes flooded in for ‘amazing Billy’ after the crash.
His former school said the teenager was a ‘loveable young man who always had a smile on his face’.
Michael Salt, assistant deputy coroner, recorded a verdict of accidental death.
He said: ‘As a result of the incident he sustained extensive head injuries and there’s no suggestion of any involvement of any third party vehicle.
‘This inquiry heard evidence that the vehicle may have been travelling at high speeds and he may have consumed alcohol.
‘Control of the vehicle was lost causing these injuries.’
After the inquest, Mr Cooney’s sister, Vanessa, said: ‘We miss him, it’s turned our world upside down. He wasn’t a silly lad, it’s just one mistake.’

I agree with Abigail, Failsworth …. it is not worth the time and effort critising someone you do not know ….. the young lad`s family is bearing the loss and this is the time to condole and not condemn.

Another tragic case of a young lad drink driving. Hopefully he didn’t die in vain and that others can learn from him so it wouldn’t happen again.

It is a terrible shame that died, we all been there and anyone who says he has not is a liar!! Very high price to pay, we all think it happens only to others.
But, that is why they pay such high premiems for insurance. After years of Driving you realise that speeding away from the traffic lights and laugthing at the older Driver only to be stopped by the next set of lights and low and behold the older Driver pulls up besides you and smiles! Please young people listen to your older and more experinced people, we been there seen it done!

Lucky he didn’t kill anyone else.

“As for the older driver,he has experienced EVERYTHING throughout his years of driving, and knows how to deal with each situation…..and speeding is rarely one of his problems.” – Richards, Milton Keynes., 15/2/2012 16:09 === No their problems include: driving the wrong way down motorways, mounting pavements and taking out pedestrians, hitting the accelerator instead of the brake, etc. These are usually age related so there should be a driving test every 5 years after 70 because quite often old people selfishly believe they have a right to continue driving even when they’re incompetent.

” He wasn’t a silly lad”……………………………..What planet are you on? Yes he was. His decisions and actions directly caused his death, and could have killed or maimed many other innocent people. Just how much more silly can you get?

At least he did’nt take anyone else with him.

I feel sorry for his family, but pleased he didn’t take out anyone else.
It is just another example of certain groups of young people that have no respect for both the law and common sense.
These people have no respect for others and think they have no responsibility to others as well.

As bad as it is to read this story, it’s disrespectful to leave such awful comments. I was a friend of Billy’s, and I agree that if I read a story like this about someone I didn’t know, then I would think ‘how could someone be so stupid?’ etc. However, some of the comments that are being left on here are heartless and inconsiderate.
If this was your son/brother/friend you would not like to read these comments about them.
Yes, it was a ridiculous thing to do, it was his own fault and yes he could have injured somebody else and I’m sure all of his friends and family are aware of that. However, he was somebody’s son/brother/friend and it’s not nice to read such things about someone you loved.
Please think twice before you post what you want to say.

And all you ‘experts’ keep bleating that no one over 60 should be driving. This driver was 19.
