The son and daughter of a couple murdered at their home broke down today as they begged for help in finding their parents’ killers, saying the light had been ‘switched out’ in their lives and their hearts were ‘broken forever’.
Michelle Kirwan, 39, wept inconsolably as she and brother Avtar Kolar, 32, described the heartbreak caused by the death of their parents.
Avtar Kolar, 62, and his wife Carole, 58, were found dead yesterday morning at their home in Handsworth Wood, Birmingham.
The couple were found at the semi-detached property on Friary Road by their son, a serving police officer, shortly after 8am.

Heartbreak: Michelle Kirwan and her brother Avtar Kolar wept today as they spoke about their love for their murdered parents, found dead by their police officer brother Jason in their home
Tears: The siblings spoke to media and appealed for help in finding their parents’ killer
At a press conference today, daughter Ms Kirwan said: ‘Yesterday the light was switched out in our lives and our hearts have been broken forever.
‘My mum and dad were the sweetest, kindest people that I have ever met and would do anything for anyone.
‘They were the beautiful parents of myself, Jason, Taz and Marie, and the precious nanna and grandad of eight grandchildren, who adored them with all their hearts.’
The couple, who had been married for 40 years, had four children and eight grandchildren.

Ms Kirwan told the press conference that after her family learned of the killing ‘the light was switched out in our lives and our hearts have been broken forever’
Mrs
Kirwan, noticeably devastated, struggled to speak as she described how
the family would meet at ‘Nanny’s’ every Friday night, where her mother
played bingo and card games with the children.
‘It was noisy and chaotic but we would never miss a week,’ she said.
She said her mother worked at her grandchildren’s school at a before- and after-school club where she was known as ‘Nanny Cal’.
‘She was like the Pied Piper with the children and they adored her.
‘They
would follow her around everywhere and Thursdays was Nanny’s special
day, where she would bring in sweets for all the children as a reward
for being her stars.’
She said the family had received
messages describing her mother as a ‘truly amazing woman’, and ‘one in a
million, such a happy and positive lady’.

Breaking down, she said: ‘As a family we could not have been closer.
‘We did everything together – holidays, Christmas, birthdays and weddings. We adored each other and loved each other so much.
‘Whoever has done this has not taken just two lives, but a further 16. Our hearts are broken forever and our lives will never be the same.”
Holding his sister’s hand, Avtar Kolar – whose own son was born just a week ago – said the whole family was struggling to come to terms with the tragedy.
‘Not only has whoever did this taken two lives, but they have taken away our mother, father, grandad, grandma, brother and sister,’ he said.
‘The hardest thing anyone could ever do is to tell their children that they will never see Nanny and Granddad again. My baby is one week old and I just don’t know where to start.
‘We are all hurting so much inside because they were so special – not only to us, but to everybody who ever met them. They wouldn’t hurt a fly and we just can’t understand how this can happen.’
He begged for help in finding his parents’ killers, adding: ‘We are now reaching out to anybody out there who could please, please help.
‘No matter how little or however much they can. Somebody out there knows who did this, so please I beg of you help us catch the person or people who has taken these two most special people away from us.’
At the couple’s sizeable semi-detached home forensic investigations continued while workers from a local florist delivered flowers from the family to the scene.
A card on a bouquet of red roses left a scene read: ‘Nanny and granddad, we love you to the moon and back, our life will never be complete again, we adore you, love you forever.’
The moving card was signed simply ‘your grandchildren’.
A card ‘In Loving Memory of A Dear Mother’ was left in the garden with flowers. It read: ‘Mom, why? No life will ever be the same without you. We adore you and miss you so much. The pain is unbearable. Love always, Your Children.’
Another from the children, ‘In Memory of a Dear Father’, said: ‘Our life has stopped. It will never be the same. We will miss you so much. The pain in our hearts will never ease. Love always, Your Children.’
Another bunch of flowers at the scene came from friends expressing their disbelief and outrage at the killings.
The card read: ‘To Carole and Tari, how could anyone do such a thing to such a lovely and wonderful couple. We are heartbroken, love you loads and miss you loads. Why?’
The couple, who had been married for 40 years, had been due to take care of their grandchildren, but had not turned up.
After they failed to answer his
phonecalls, their police officer son Jason went to check on them. He
walked into the home to find the bodies of his father, 62, and
58-year-old mother.
West Midlands Police have vowed to
work ‘around the clock’ to find the couple’s killers, with 60 detectives
involved in the case.
Detective Superintendent Richard
Baker, who is leading the inquiry, said the incident had had a
‘devastating effect’ on the whole family.
He said forensic examinations of the
scene were continuing and forensic scientists and forensic scene
examiners were likely to be there for a couple of days.
The two bodies were discovered at a house in Handsworth Wood, Birmingham
Mr Baker said detectives are following
a number of lines of inquiry after receiving numerous phone calls in
connection with the double murder.
He said the couple’s bodies had been
removed from the house, and post-mortem examinations are likely to start
later today and expected to continue until tomorrow.
He said this would indicate a
‘definitive cause of death’ and detectives would know whether any
weapons had been used in the attack.
Mr Baker refused to be drawn on reports that the couple’s son, who is employed by the force, works for a unit set up to tackle gangs and organised crime.
‘We are still investigating the circumstances surrounding this attack; however, this is a very complex investigation and we are continuing to keep an open mind.
‘There is nothing at this stage to indicate that the fact that the couple’s son is a serving police officer had anything to do with their deaths.’
He added: ‘To reiterate, the last time the family spoke to the couple was at 7.15pm on Tuesday night, so I need to hear from anyone who saw anything unusual or out of the ordinary in the Friary Road area of Handsworth Wood after that time to contact us.
‘I must again stress, any information could be vital.’
Police
said it had been ‘obvious from the scene the couple had been assaulted
and had more than likely died of their injuries’.

were discovered
Detective Superintendent Baker called the double murder a ‘horrendous’ crime and vowed to work ‘round the clock’ to catch those responsible.
‘This
was a very, very close and loving family,’ he said. ‘That is really
quite evident from going round and visiting them this morning. It is a
very difficult time for them.
‘We are confident that we will bring this case to a swift conclusion and bring the offender to justice.’
The night before the attack, one of the couple’s children had spoken to them about child care arrangements, the police said.
But after members of the family failed
to contact them the next morning, the pair’s worried son Jason went to
their four-bedroom home to check on them.
A woman – believed to be one of their
daughters – was seen ‘crying inconsolably’ at the house when the bodies
were found.
A forensic investigator points something out to a senior officer investigating the deaths
Neighbours of the couple told how they had heard an
‘almighty scream’ after the grim discovery at the four-bedroom suburban
home in the Handsworth Wood area of Birmingham.
Resident Shaun Hemmings, 35, said: ‘My wife and I were watching TV when we heard this almighty scream.
‘I looked out of the window and there were swarms of police outside.
‘I saw a woman crying and screaming next to the house. I am so shocked
to hear it is a double murder.’ Police are keeping an open mind about
what kind of weapon was used.
More than 60 detectives and uniformed officers are thought to be working on trying to crack the case.
The couple’s children, Jason, Michelle, Avtar and Marie, were too upset to comment last night.
A family member said: ‘We just can’t talk about it at the moment. We are
just not in the right frame of mind. Everything is just too raw at the
moment.’
There are already 60 officers investigating the murder. Mr and Mrs Kolar were assaulted before they died, police say

all we can say, is that there is too much evil happening in this country – we have heard of nothing except MURDER from the news for weeks now, what is going on??? Surely this signifies a breakdown in society? Every few days, it is one savage murder after another – god bless these people – the law has to bring back the death penalty.

It is time the public got together to force these gutless polititions to bring back hanging and full life sentences for the scum that freely roam our streets.

My heart out goes out to this poor family, the daughter was just on TV and it made me cry to watch her utter grief. May God rest their parents and may their awful attacker be brought to justice, though nothing can bring their dear mum and dad back, they sounded like a lovely couple. RIP.

Terrible. Senseless. I hope they catch the killers fast. Poor family. RIP.

This almost moved me to tears. To see the agony of losing their parents clearly etched across their faces is heartbreaking, I hope the police work as hard as they possibly can to catch and bring the murderer(s) that have destroyed this family to justice. It makes me so angry to see the evidence of such evil at work in this world. Would these things keep on happening if we brought back the death penalty? Something our government should seriously consider. RIP Mr. and Mr. Kolar

So, so sorry for this family’s loss. I’m in tears, typing this; I can’t imagine the pain they must be going through at the moment. I hope that as they are obviously a very close family, they take comfort and strength from each other. Sleep peacefully, Mr Mrs Kolar.
