Local government spokesman Ahmad Zia Abdulzai said that State Prosecutor Abdul Qayoom was the target of the blast, which occurred in the city of Jalalabad.
Qayoom, his driver, four guards and 10 civilians sustained injuries in the attack, Abdulzai said.
A doctor at the city’s main hospital said that four of the injured, including the prosecutor, were in “very serious” condition.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, but Afghan officials often blame the Taliban for similar attacks.
A day before, a huge explosion near the Indian consulate in Jalalabad killed at least eight people and injured 20 others.
Over a decade of the costly US-led war in Afghanistan has failed to end the militancy in the country and the US, which has thousands of troops on the ground in Afghanistan, is now trying to sit down for talks with the Taliban militants.
The United States and its allies invaded Afghanistan in 2001 as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror. The offensive removed the Taliban from power, but insecurity remains across the country.
