Bodies recovered from Queensland chopper crash

THE bodies of two men killed in a helicopter crash were recovered on Friday from heavily wooded terrain in central Queensland.

The chopper, from a North Queensland charter company, crashed in dense bushland at Shoalwater Bay, near Rockhampton, around midday (AEST) yesterday.

A 50-year-old man survived the crash and remains in Rockhampton Hospital in a serious condition.

Police say he alerted authorities of the crash from his mobile phone while still in the helicopter, initially mistakenly telling police just one of the crew was dead.

The trio were conducting maintenance patrols of communications towers, Inspector Mike Curtin told ABC Radio.

Due to the isolated location and dense bushland, it took a day before a rescue team could recover the bodies.

Police are preparing a report for the coroner.
