The body of a 33-year-old Greek man, Efstathios (Stathis) Anthis, was identified off the coast of the United Kingdom on Tuesday.
The family’s lawyer, Stavros Georgiou, confirmed that the body was that of Anthis when speaking to the press.
Body identified as Anthis
The body, which was found on the rocks behind the hotel at which Stathis worked, was discovered on April 13. The male body had deteriorated and it took until recently to identify it as Stathis Anthis.
His older brother, Dimitris Anthis was involved in helping solve the case. Dimitris traveled to the UK on March 29 to assist local officials and friends with the search for his brother. He also provided a DNA sample which the authorities used in conjunction with dental records to help identify Stathis’ body.
The information on the police investigation comes from Aggeliki Nikolouli, a Greek journalist and crime expert.
“Finally, through an announcement by the police authorities and the DNA identification procedure, it is confirmed that the body that has been found belongs to Stathis Anthi, the Greek who disappeared from the hotel where the staff was staying under strange circumstances,” confirmed Georgiou, lawyer of the Anthi family.
His cause of death is expected to be released with the medical examiner’s report.
The tragic death of Stathis Anthis
Stathis last spoke with his brother on March 5, but he was last seen alive on March 8. A coworker saw him jump out of the ground floor window of the hotel he was staying in at around 4:30 AM, and reported it to the police.
When Dimitris was called upon to give a DNA sample to assist in potentially identifying the body uncovered on April 13 as his brother’s, he spoke to Devon Live saying:
“I am devastated. I gave a DNA sample this morning in Islington Police Station to see if it matches with the body that has been found.
“I have been told it could take up to 10 days for the results.
“Since being released from quarantine I have been carrying out research,” Demetris stated. “I have been to the island, and spoke with the hotel manager as well as the police.
“I have been told before that he had been to Plymouth for the weekend with a friend who dropped him back off at Burgh Island at 4 AM that morning. Why he came back at that time I don’t know; I don’t have the answers.”
According to press reports, the last time Demetris spoke to his brother was three days before the incident.
He related to interviewers that “He was okay, but said he was a bit stressed about quarantine and he had been struggling. I told him we are in the same situation.
“He has had no previous mental health issues. If he was hiding something from me or my family I have been unable to see it.”
Prior to his untimely death, Anthis had only been working at the Burgh Island Hotel for a short period of time, since November of 2020. Before residing in Devon, the Greek immigrant had been living and working in London.
