On July 6, gunmen launched a gun and bomb attack against a secondary school in Mamudo village, near the city of Potiskum in Yobe. At least 42 people were killed and dozens more injured in the wake of the assault.
“We fully support the attack on this Western education school in Mamudo,” said Abubakar Shekau in the 10-minute video obtained by AFP On Saturday.
On July 7, the Nigerian government published a statement, saying that Yobe State Governor Ibrahim Gaidam “directed that all secondary schools in the state be closed down from Monday July 8th, 2013 until a new academic session begins in September.”
A senior police officer said the attack took place when the students were asleep. The officer added that the militants started “shooting sporadically and subsequently set the students’ hostel ablaze.”
Boko Haram has claimed responsibility for a number of deadly gun and bomb attacks in various parts of Nigeria since 2009.
Boko Haram — whose name means “Western education is forbidden” — says its goal is to overthrow the Nigerian government.
