Bomb, bullets kill 3 in E Afghanistan

The bomb detonated near a shop in the main bazaar of Sabari district on Wednesday as a police patrol was passing, the local governor’s office said in a statement.

Four other civilians were also injured in the incident.

In Nangarhar, an education department official was shot dead by gunmen, the Education Ministry said.

Nobody has claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Violence continues to plague Afghanistan despite the presence of thousands of foreign forces, over a decade into the US-led invasion of the country in 2001.

In the first six months of 2012, over 1,140 Afghan civilians were killed and around 2,000 were wounded, mostly by roadside bombs, according to statistics released by the United Nations. Thirty percent of the casualties were women and children.
