According to NBC News, the US attorney’s office in Boston said Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, was charged on Monday with “one count of using and conspiring to use a weapon of mass destruction in the U.S” that could carry the death penalty
The suspect is still a patient at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Massachusetts on Monday and listed in “serious but stable” condition. Investigators have reported he has hand, leg, head and neck injuries after a failed suicide attempt when he put a handgun in his mouth and pulled the trigger.
“Today’s charges bring a successful end to a tragic week for the city of Boston and for our country,” Attorney General Eric Holder said in a statement. “We will hold those who are responsible for these heinous acts accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”
New shocking details emerged on Monday about the carjacking by the two Chechnyan brothers Tameran and Dzhokhar on Friday.
CNN reported that in the affidavit from the victim of the carjacking on Friday, whose name has not been released, one of the brothers knocked on his window and then said to the owner of the black Mercedes SUV, “Did you hear about the Boston explosion?…I did that…I am serious,’’ according to the affidavit.
During the preliminary charges Tsarnaev was also advised of his rights and assigned three federal public defenders. A probable cause hearing has been set for May 30. The charges could carry the death penalty
It was last Monday, April 15, when three people were killed and more than 170 injured after two deadly bombs ripped through crowds of people waiting for people to cross the finish line at the Boston Marathon.
