When it comes to bomb threats called in to schools, the east and west coasts of the US have very different responses that might say something about how to handle these situations.
In Los Angeles, the Unified School District (USD) system closed “due to a threat of violence to students at all schools in the sprawling district” because of an email sent to several of the USD members.
LAPD Chief Charlie Beck told the press that the email “mentioned attack by ‘explosive devices’ as well as ‘assault rifles and machine pistols’.”
Beck chastised critics of the USD reaction as “irresponsible” because the decision was made with the information available at the time. He added that threatening email was routed through Germany, “but the origin is yet to be determined, and we believe to be much closer than Germany.”
Congressman Brad Sherman reviewed the email and commented that it was “wide ranging” because “the author claims to be an extremist Muslim who has teamed up with local jihadists. We do not know whether these claims are true or a lie. We do not know whether this email is from a devout Muslim who supports jihadists or perhaps a non-Muslim with a different agenda”
After speaking with the LAPD, LA Superintendent Ramon Cortines decided to closed all 900 plus campuses leaving an excess of 640,000 students at home because of an email.
Cortines said that he would not take the chance that these emails were real and risk the lives of the children. However, he also admitted that this type of threat is not unusual.
Yet, with San Bernardino just an hour’s drive from LA, Cortines decided that the best thing to do was to shut down the schools.
In New York, the City schools received “almost the exact same threat”, and yet Police Commissioner William Bratton immediately called it “a hoax” and said about the email that it reminded him of the ShowTime series “Homeland” and that whomever wrote it must be a big fan.
This is because the threat “mirrors a lot of recent episodes”, according to the police commissioner who called the LA response a “significant overreaction.”
Bratton explained: “We are very comfortable … that this is not a credible threat and is not something we are concerned with. What we are concerned with is overreacting to it. We will stay aware, we will stay involved, but at all costs, cannot start overreacting to what will probably be a series of copycat-type initiatives.”
The NYPD tweeted : “These threats are made to promote fear…we can not allow us to raise the levels of fear.”
