The ranks of Democrats who are savaging President Obama over the UN Security Council resolution against settlements grows by the minute. New Jersey Senator Cory Booker wants in on that anti-Israel sloganeering, and so does Democratic megadonor Haim Saban, who is Israel-American but says the resolution was against the “American interest.” I guess Booker and Saban have a date in 2020.
Booker brags he’s an original co-sponsor of a new Senate bill denouncing the Obama vote. He’s joined by neoconservatives Tom Cotton and Lindsey Graham, and a bunch of other Democrats, Michael Bennet, Chris Coons, Joe Donnelly of Indiana, Richard Blumenthal, Kirsten Gillibrand, Bob Casey, Bob Menendez, Chuck Schumer, Bill Nelson. Cory Booker’s office says he is one of 12 Democrats sponsoring the “Bipartisan Resolution Condemning Anti-Israel Efforts at United Nations.”
[The Senate] resolution objects to the passage of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2334, as well as all efforts that undermine direct, bilateral negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians for a secure and peaceful settlement.
“UN Resolution 2334 was a one-sided effort targeting the state of Israel that set back efforts to move us closer to a two-state solution and to peace…,” Sen. Booker said. “Our legislative effort makes it clear that the US-Israel partnership is unbreakable, that the UN is an inappropriate venue to impose restrictions on the peace process, and that Congress will act to protect direct negotiations that move us closer to a two-state solution.”
Wall Street Journal on the Democratic defection:
Right on time, Haim Saban released a statement knocking the resolution yesterday. An Israeli-American, Saban says: “I’m a one issue guy and my issue is Israel.” But he says Obama’s decision was against the US national interest.
Saban was intimately involved in the failed Hillary Clinton campaign. He regularly consulting the campaign braintrust– and his one issue there too was Israel.
His statement was picked up in Variety and Ynet yesterday. “Haim Saban Says He’s ‘Deeply Disturbed’ by Obama Administration’s Recent Actions on Israel”
“As a longstanding Democrat who has supported and defended President Obama on his treatment of Israel throughout his presidency, I am deeply disturbed by the Administration’s decision not to veto UN Security Council Resolution 2334 and Secretary Kerry’s subsequent one sided speech. These actions undermine our country’s long-standing support for Israel and harm any long-term prospects for peace, which is in our national interest. …
“Fostering the conditions for peace, security, and prosperity for both Israelis and Palestinians is a core American interest. In the months and years ahead, it is essential that the US — in its role as the only superpower today — take the necessary steps to maintain its credibility as an intermediary between the parties and work to advance a sustainable two-state solution, in which a Jewish, democratic State of Israel lives in peace and security alongside its neighbors or, until the conditions are ripe for peace, promote a separation between the two peoples.””
Notice the language “promote a separation between the two peoples”? And one is stateless, and rightsless. That’s apartheid.
The Democrats are going to have to choose, between the rank and file, which doesn’t care for Israel, and the donor base, who do. It’s getting more and more out in the open. Even Jeffrey Goldberg says Jews are the Dem donor class.
