On Saturday, the Brazilian court found the officers guilty and sentenced them to 624 years in prison for using excessive force to break up a fight among inmates.
After a week-long trial, the seven-member jury found the officers to be guilty of killing 52 inmates in the second session of the trial’s four-section process.
Although prosecutors said the inmates were executed, the defense claimed that the officers were acting in self-defense.
Survivors have accused police officers of opening fire on prisoners who had surrendered or were hiding in their cells.
Each session focuses on the deaths that took place on each of the four floors of the Carandiru prison in Sao Paulo, on October 2, 1992.
The case was brought to trial in April after over 20 years.
During the first session, 23 police officers were found guilty and sentenced to 153 years for 13 deaths.
In 2001, Colonel Ubiratan Guimaraes, the only person tried up to that time, was sentenced to 632 years in prison.
The Carandiru prison was home to 8,000 inmates at the time of the deadly incident and was known as Latin America’s largest jail.
The prison was demolished in 2002.
