Britain wants a divorce from the EU and says will get it: Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond says the UK could walk away from the 27-nation bloc unless the EU leaders make meaningful and substantial reforms to the union’s internal immigration policies. But, there are fears human rights could be violated.
Talking to Press TV’s UK Desk, Journalist and Political Commentator Anna O’Leary is taking issues with Number 10’s insistence that the EU reform its immigration policy. But, she say that has not come as a surprise to her.
“The right to travel is one of man’s basic human rights. The 1997 Labour government abolished the rule barring entry to the UK for spouses of UK citizens, said O’Leary.
“In 2011 Prime Minister Cameron pledged to cut the net level of immigration and implement tighter rules for giving foreign spouses the right to stay. It is no surprise that a Tory government wants to pass draconian laws.”
Although the tensions are running high between London and Brussels, the UK and the European Union will bury the hatchet at the end of the day.
“Despite their differences, the UK and EU will work them out,” says the journalist who’s a contributor to the globalnewscenter.com. “Hammond stating that they have to be prepared to leave the EU is simply a negotiating stance. Special concessions will be made for Britain and the gravy train will roll on,” added O’Leary.
