Britons increasingly support EU exit: Poll

A new poll shows more Britons are now supporting Britain to leave the European Union (EU) with pessimism growing over Prime Minister David Cameron’s ability to enforce reforms to the bloc.

The survey was the first published since EU leaders nominated Jean-Claude Juncker to become the next president of the European Commission.

Sunday’s poll published by the Mail on Sunday newspaper showed 47 percent would vote for Britain to leave the bloc if there was a referendum, with 39 percent saying they would back staying in.

The 28-nation bloc voted 26 to 2 on Friday, electing former Luxembourg premier Juncker to replace outgoing Jose Manuel Barroso.

The polling for the Mail also showed that 30 percent of people felt Juncker’s nomination made it more likely they would vote to leave the bloc if given the chance, while only 13 percent of Britons said they backed Juncker for the job.

Cameron had vowed to renegotiate Britain’s terms of membership with the EU, noting that the reforms are crucial to persuading Britain to stay in the bloc.

Earlier in June, he also threatened that the UK would exit the EU if Juncker became the new president of the Commission.
